Economics is not intuitive, I was late to discover. It just takes a little understanding of economics to see how price gouging is helpful at bringing new supplies in. It’s not on the radar screen of the mainstream media that DDT saves lives. We’ve been so trained by our high school and college educations and Rachel Carson to think that DDT is evil. Maybe I read more widely and I watched the footage of Americans having picnics while surrounded by the white smoke when we sprayed vast quantities of DDT. Some people even ran toward the trucks, they were so thrilled to have mosquitoes killed. We did end our malaria problem, but only by spraying vast quantities of DDT did we cause problems. Even then, the only problem was the thinning of the eggshells of the bald eagle. Using tiny amounts would save millions of lives. It’s so disgusting that we don’t do it. We instead waste taxpayer money on bed nets that get holes in them.

The U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday conceded a legal dispute over the federal excise tax on long-distance telephone service and said the Internal Revenue Service will refund tax paid on the service over the past three years.
Snow estimated the cost of refunding taxpayers for three years of past taxes would total about $13 billion, and said that there would be no problem in finding that amount.
Ok, while we are repealing ancient federal taxes why not move next to the income tax?
Keep the pressure on, it’s working.

Al Gore in his movie “An Unconvenient Truth” suggests that we all must change the way we live if we want to stop global warming.
The question is, “Is Al Gore willing to change his lifestyle?”
The Competitive Enterprise Institute has a 70-second video comparing Gore’s carbon “footprint” compared to the average American.
Maybe the earth would be better off if Al just stayed home.
See “Al Gore: An Inconvenient Story” here.
This from Robert Rector at the Heritage Foundation:
If enacted, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act (CIRA, S.2611) would be the most dramatic change in immigration law in 80 years, allowing an estimated 103 million persons to legally immigrate to the U.S. over the next 20 years—fully one-third of the current population of the United States.
News reports have repeatly said that the bill doesn’t give illegal aliens amnesty but Rector notes:
Under the plan, illegal immigrants who have been in the U.S. for five years or more (60 percent of illegals) would be granted immediate amnesty.
This isn’t quite as simple as it sounds here but it is pretty accurate. Upon application for adjustment of status the immigrant is here legally for all intents and purposes until and unless he or she is denied citizenship. From Senate bill 2611 Section 245B:
`(1) IN GENERAL- An alien who files an application under subsection (a)(1)(A) for adjustment of status, including a spouse or child who files for adjustment of status under subsection (b)–
`(A) shall be granted employment authorization pending final adjudication of the alien’s application for adjustment of status;
`(B) shall be granted permission to travel abroad pursuant to regulation pending final adjudication of the alien’s application for adjustment of status;
`(C) shall not be detained, determined inadmissible or deportable, or removed pending final adjudication of the alien’s application for adjustment of status, unless the alien commits an act which renders the alien ineligible for such adjustment of status; and
`(D) shall not be considered an unauthorized alien as defined in section 274A(h)(3) until such time as employment authorization under subparagraph (A) is denied.
The hardest part for illegal aliens is either proving they paid federal and state income taxes, or paying back taxes that they owe for.

It is under the alphabetical list “I” and is listed as “Immigration Reform” and click on S.2611. On the next page click on “Text of Legislation” to see for yourself. Also the page is a temporary Search and will expire after a few minutes. Just go back to the beginning and start over.
Commodities are entering record pricing levels.
The prices of commodities such as oil, copper, aluminium, platinum and sugar are smashing records — and will head higher owing to fierce demand from economic powerhouses India and China, analysts say.
Wonder what these prices will be like when we finally get around to building the rail. No matter what, it is going to cost a lot more than anyone thinks now.
